PayPal has announced a groundbreaking partnership with OpenAI to embed its digital wallet directly into ChatGPT, allowing users to complete transactions seamlessly within the AI platform. The deal makes PayPal the first payments provider to be fully integrated into ChatGPT’s ecosystem.
Starting next year, users and merchants will be able to buy and sell through ChatGPT, transforming the chatbot into a new kind of digital marketplace.
Safe and Seamless Payments Through ChatGPT
PayPal CEO Alex Chriss told CNBC that the integration will provide a secure, verified environment for both buyers and sellers. Users will be able to make purchases using their PayPal balances, bank accounts, or linked credit cards, with all standard protections — including package tracking and dispute resolution — built in.
“We’ve got hundreds of millions of loyal PayPal wallet holders who now will be able to click the ‘Buy with PayPal’ button on ChatGPT and have a safe and secure checkout experience,” Chriss said.
A Major Leap Toward AI-Powered Shopping
The move positions PayPal at the center of what experts are calling the next wave of e-commerce — agentic AI shopping. ChatGPT’s 700 million weekly users will soon be able to find and purchase products as easily as chatting with a personal assistant.
OpenAI has already partnered with Shopify, Etsy, and Walmart, and the PayPal integration strengthens its growing push into AI-driven retail.
“It’s a whole new paradigm for shopping,” Chriss added. “Agentic commerce is going to be a big part of the future.”
Behind-the-Scenes Payment Processing
In addition to consumer checkout, PayPal will manage merchant routing, payment validation, and transaction security for sellers operating through ChatGPT. This means merchants won’t need direct contracts with OpenAI — PayPal will handle the backend processes.
The company also highlighted that both merchants and consumers will be verified within PayPal’s network, reducing the risk of fraud and increasing trust.
Expanding Use of AI Internally
Alongside the ChatGPT deal, PayPal is also expanding its use of OpenAI’s enterprise AI tools to streamline internal operations and speed up product development.
The announcement comes as part of PayPal’s broader strategy to establish itself as a key player in the AI commerce ecosystem, following recent collaborations with Google and Perplexity AI.
