Lahore, Gujranwala & Gujrat at High Risk of Urban Flooding: PMD Issues Red Alert

Lahore (August 31, 2025) – The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has issued a high alert for urban flooding in Punjab, warning that Lahore, Gujranwala, and Gujrat are at serious risk due to heavy monsoon rains expected between September 1 and 3.

According to the PMD flood advisory, a strong monsoon low over Rajasthan combined with a westerly weather system could trigger torrential downpours across Punjab. The most dangerous impact is forecasted in the Sutlej, Ravi, Beas, and Chenab rivers, especially in areas near Ganda Singh Wala.

Rivers & Nullahs at Risk

Officials have cautioned that the rainfall may cause very high to exceptionally high river flows in the Sutlej, Ravi, and Chenab rivers, along with their tributaries. This could result in flash floods and urban flooding in densely populated divisions of Lahore, Gujranwala, and Gujrat.

Authorities on High Alert

The NDMA, PDMA, and irrigation departments have been instructed to remain on high alert, ensuring 24/7 monitoring of flood-prone areas. Authorities stressed that timely preparations, evacuation plans, and preventive measures are essential to minimize the impact on vulnerable communities.
The public is advised to stay updated on weather alerts, avoid unnecessary travel during heavy rains, and follow safety instructions issued by local authorities.
