Amazon Web Services (AWS) announced it has fully mitigated a technical issue that caused a massive global internet outage, disrupting major websites and apps across several industries on October 20, 2025.
The disruption affected platforms including Snapchat, Facebook, Fortnite, Canva, Coinbase, and several UK banks, according to Downdetector, a site that tracks real-time internet service disruptions.
AWS confirmed that the underlying DNS issue had been resolved, stating that “most AWS service operations are succeeding normally now,” although some requests may still be throttled as full resolution continues.
Snapchat, Canva, and UK Banks Among Those Impacted
The outage caused significant downtime for Snapchat users, who reported login and message issues. A Snapchat spokesperson acknowledged the issue and said teams were actively working to restore service.
Canva also confirmed temporary disruptions due to its reliance on AWS cloud services. The company said access was being gradually restored, and most users could now resume normal operations.
Meanwhile, UK banks such as Lloyds and Halifax experienced service interruptions, with users reporting difficulties accessing mobile banking and websites earlier in the day.
AWS Explains the Root Cause
In an official update, AWS engineers said they had identified the root cause and implemented multiple mitigation steps to restore connectivity.
“The underlying DNS issue has been fully mitigated, and most AWS Service operations are succeeding normally now,” AWS said in a statement.
Some regional data centers may still experience increased error rates, and users were advised to clear browser caches to fix lingering issues.
Previous Global Outage Highlights Growing Digital Dependency
This marks one of the most significant global outages since the CrowdStrike software glitch in July 2024, which disrupted airlines, hospitals, and businesses worldwide — costing corporations over $5 billion in direct losses.
The AWS incident underscores the world’s deep reliance on cloud infrastructure, with AWS holding around 30% of the global cloud services market, supporting over four million businesses.
